I have stoneworking. I have a bucket and string and planks and blocks. I'm stood in a puddle and still not getting the option to build a well. What am I missing? This well saves me a bit of a walk.

Edit le deux: Does it have to be rope rope, will spindly taproot not do?

Yeah, you have to make rope, taproot is just string so you need 10 strings for a rope.
