Yes living close to rivers is good. I primarily "hunt" by just boating up and down rivers.

Why you shouldn't live in view of a river:

Raiders. You'll be easily seen and targetted by those looking for an easy target. It only takes a few minutes to walk to the nearest river with a boat on your shoulders. Live far enough away you can't be seen by someone in a boat. You're settlement will still be visible on the minimap, but that would require someone to get out of their boat and trek far enough inland to see who you are and what you have. It's near impossible to find a good place to settle and not be visible on the minimap before you get enough defences up..

Yes, not only river raiders either. People stick close to rivers when first exploring the world because they are a easy landmark. Build inland at first. Until you have Yeomanry and then you can safely (trespassing skill notwithstanding). Most locations have pros and cons, but for a newb river locales have more cons than you should have.

Pretty much this.

You have the added benefit of quick travel via boat but the added con of other people having quick travel to you as well. When you can better defend yourself and your property, then rivers and lakes are fine.
