how do i find chickens? im running low on food and its very hard to catch rabbits. I remember seeing a few chickens and catching them. but i cant find any more :/

To catch rabbits just walk up to them until you're standing on top of them, turn on run or sprint, and right click them. They should go immediately into your inventory.

Chickens are usually found on heath or moors (the yellow and the pink terrain). Run around those to find chickens. If you need food badly, find and apple, mulberry, or if you're really desperate, a hazelnut tree.

They're a random and generally common spawn on grasslands, heath, and moor. Just leave the area by a few screen for 15-20 minutes to despawn it and come back to see if it has spawned chickens then if you don't find any your first run through.

Also, learn to fish. It's time consuming, but consistent (if you fish at the leaping fishes).

Only place you can catch fish. There is a problem with the fish node being depleted and the animation doesn't stop. Also, stick to fresh bait: worms, leeches, and intestines.
