Once you harvest hemp or flax it will appear on the ground below the just harvested crop it unlike seed will not instantly appear in your inventory

OP: Hemp also works. As a note: only the person harvesting the plant gets discovery for plant fibers (and poppy flowers or straw).

If you explore enough, you may find abandoned settlements (make sure they are abandoned), that have plants growing.

This is probably the easiest. Basically, if it's on a claim, leave it alone. If it's on a village claim, make sure you have criminal acts off so you don't leave vandalism scents.
