Qs about melee/unarmed combat.

Postby nehcnhoj » Sun Sep 11, 2011 5:49 am

I've done a bit of reading about the system but I'm still unclear of how it works.

I understand that points into melee/unarmed combat increases the longevity of my defense bar. However, how does the game "detect" which stat I'm using for defense, as in, does it depend on what equipment I'm using before my defense bar is dependent on my melee combat stat or is it a combination of both the melee and unarmed combat stats?

If I choose to go into melee combat is it advisable to put points into unarmed? If it depends what are some of the pros / cons of being more of a hybrid instead of focusing on melee?

Thanks so much!

You have different maneuvers to determine which stat it uses for ur defense. Shield uses 1.25 of ur melee weight as defense. Dodge/Death or glory/Oak stance/combat meditation use 1.00 of ur unarmed weight as defense. Bloodlust uses .5 of ur unarmed weight as defense.

Generally speaking, alot of people are using mainly unarmed but they'll put some points into melee combat to use sting or valorous strike as finishers. In most cases unarmed would win a 1v1 fight just because you don't have to use initiative to punch and you can use more maneuvers.

Ah, thanks that makes a whole lot of sense.

A few friends and I just started out so we're not too concerned about PvP yet, though if it comes looking for us I guess we'll be in trouble xD. I'm more researching on what would be the most efficient use of LP to set myself up to tame animals, aurochs/bears. We almost have access to steel, though only q10. Considering we can soon make swords / armor any recommendations to go down the unarmed/melee combat path for efficient PvEing?

Thanks again!

Unarmed for sure. It doesn't hurt to have some melee though (i go for about 1/3 of my unarmed) for melee to be able to use sting as a finisher.

For taming aurochs what would be a safe stat / equipment / UA level to start with for someone new? Using the "gate trick" i've read about.

First time i did it i had 10 UA. It is possible to do it without being hit, however, i think with around 40 UA (i could be very wrong about this number) u could soak a hit from an auroch so that would allow for more error.

I'm not sure Unarmed will mostly win 1v1 battle - The Haven battle/fight system is complex and one person always ends up dead or severly wounded.. I have a freind I continuesly spar with, we are both okay at the combat system and fairly evened in stats (about 30 appart in UAC/Melee) but we consistently learn new tactics every time we spar - I would say my friend has a better grasp of the system but our win % is about 50/50
I have found although he can attack quicker, he can't take as much defence off due to the extra 25% to my defence bar and the quality of my sheild.

He can gernerate IP quicker than I can due to all his manuvers, same with attack bar and defence bar - This does not mean he has a distinct advantage though, as this requires more skill to manage - IE his defence bar could dry up very quickly if he leaves DoG on or if I sting him while he's using bloodlust it can severly alter the flow of battle.

I read in a thread somewhere on these forums "Combat is about putting a spanner in the other persons works" IE - Screwing up what they had planned. I think ever since UAC got nerfed things are at equal footing. Tactics play a huge part in combat - Punch/flex combo is not the be all end all.

Just my 2cents - I've never had hugh level PvP with the "gods" such as Nao, Vigilance or Klaue to name a few.

I have alaways been an unaremed user in the past and this character I have attempted to go full Melee - Only time will tell how it compares to UAC I guess..

tl;dr? IMO/experience Combat is tricky and neither Melee or UAC is better than each other so far with what I have seen.

---------------------------

Stats for taming:

20 UAC/Melee and up - You fight through a gate/sign post and it's 1v1 - Taming is all about if you have time to wait or not. - Boars are a little harder but still should be fine with 20 UAC/Melee.
I had a retardedly huge signature and have gotten this embarrassing replacement to show for it.
