is it possible to turn items so they fit in containers?

personal example: largest container I can currently make is a crate, its only 3 tiles high, but is 5 tiles wide. boards are 4 tiles long, but are vertical, can they be turned horizontal and stored in a crate?

Find some crappy clay, make an urn. Same size but the other way round, so you can fit three boards in it.

Here's an even better tip

You see how you can fit those planks in the sign when you make the crates? Use that to store planks, just put planks in it and don't build it, wala! Plank storage! Note that you can use better methods later such as boats or carts for plank storage signs.

thanks a bunch, didn't know you could take items out of the sign :D using row boat signs now

follow up question, can you have more than the amount needed in a sign?

You cannot. You'll need to make multiple signs.

Imo carts signs are better than boat's since their collision area is only one tile while boat is 2x2 tiles I think.
