How rare is gold. I'm just curious.

Very rare, most players will never see any.

It has also an awful smelting rate making it even rarer. You don't get full bars but instead a bit less than 2 nuggets for each smelter load. Same with silver, although it seems to be a bit more common judging from the trade threads.

Edit: I've also read a thread once where someone claimed that gold could only be found on level 3 and lower whilst silver could already be found on level 2. I cannot say whether it's true though.

What layer are you able to mine gold up from i hear its not on the cave layer?

Just build hundreds of chicken coups and hope for golden eggs. Otherwise dig into the deeper layers and mine constantly in every direction in hopes of striking a rare metal. Layer 2 or deeper has rare metals. I can confirm that layer 2 has silver at the very least, gold may not spawn until the even lower levels for all I know though.

This world I know that pande have found gold (more than once), Pickard has gold, Rescu has gold, Roadville had gold (it got taken however), and based on confidential conversations I have had with minor villages, I know at least 2 have found small nodes. It does seem to be *much* rarer than silver, but I think that its rarity is probably slightly exaggerated because only very powerful factions will openly state that they have found it.
