Trading with an Idol

I'm somewhat new and interested in trading, and it looks like I need a village idol to trade effectively. What is the safest way for me to do this? Should I build it outside of my palisade walls, so if a trade goes bad the griefer isn't in my base? Or is there some reason I would want to protect the village idol?

Village Idol is your protection. It's also your only of two teleport target locations available (besides crossroads, which you must have an idol to construct) and is the only claim superior to personal claims. Keys suck and can''t really be safely used so you probably want your idol inside.
