This error is usually caused by the resource server. All the graphics are cached on the game server and have to be loaded to your computer just like a web page. Odds are there isn't anything you can do other than keep checking back to see if the problem has been resolved.

Just to make sure if there is or isn't anything you can do, we need to know:

What OS and version you're running (XP? Win7? 32 or 64?)
Version of Java (does it match the OS properly?)
What client you're using

I have the same problem as well for the normal client (I use Ender's so idc if resource server gets fixed or not), I have Windows XP and the error shows after logging into the game.

That's usually when the problem first shows as it has to retrieve the character portraits at that time, however it can occur after you're logged in, too.

Using one of the third party clients is one of the potential workarounds for the issue, but requires a lot of work to make it functional. If someone hasn't been using a third party client, it won't do them too much good to start when the resource server quits functioning. Ender's caches the resources as they're downloaded and using one or more of the resource packs (such as Darki's) decreases the number of resources the client relies on the server for. There isn't a complete graphics pack, though, so again not a complete solution.

No idea if anyone has gotten a complete resource pack off the server. If they have, they haven't shared it with the public that I'm aware.
