Hold it in your hands and right-click the water, you'll walk over and fill it.

edit: by "in your hands" I mean picking it up out of your inventory and r-clicking the water with it

Yeah i was hesitant to try that for fear i would discard teh item in teh water. Anyway it turns out i couldn't get the water anyway, somebody on teh opposite shore apparently has claim to it. Even with criminal acts on i couldnt' take it.

You'll find that for most things like the waterskin you'll need to pick the object up onto the cursor and then right click on what you wish to interact with. Just make sure you don't LEFT CLICK. You'll drop the item.

As far as the water source you were at, just move a bit farther up or downstream to fill your flask or use a boat to get to the middle.

Shouldn't i be able to just turn on criminal acts and take water from the lake as water quantity is infinite? This lake doesn't seem to have an end to property claims.

Some water is of a higher quality, and taking water from high quality spots decreases the quality temporarily. Since everyone wants high quality stuff, its valuable, so people will protect it.

To take water from a claim, you will need Vandalism. Once you get that, taking water from a claim leaves vandalism scents, which can be used to track you down and possibly kill you, even while you are offline, if your hearth fire is unprotected.

You probably will need to get theft (20k LP for trespassing and 30k for theft) to be able to take water from a claimed river, but it would be a waste of LP. Some people like to enlarge their claims just to piss people off IMO, or they don't want anyone to steal high q water, but from hearing the whole lake was covered in a claim they are just being a prick.

EDIT: Damn Ninja'd d: never knew you needed vandalism too, but makes sense.

Yup. Theft is for taking things out of containers and liftable objects. You're damaging the the ground/node, so therefore vandalism. It's also to make the creation of vandalism alts a bit harder.

Make at least a reasonable attempt to know what you're talking about, and that will help with those darn ninjas.;) (I make plenty of mistakes, too. Just try to double check facts if you can.)
