Swimming isn't nearly as lethal as it was in W3 so it's actually not a bad idea for him to do this. He can probably swim for 3-4 tiles before he's at risk of drowning and most rivers aren't too wide so he should be able to make it.
Best idea is to return to your hearthfire.
