Recommended Marksman ship?

Postby Westraptor » Mon Sep 19, 2011 12:31 pm

Im gonna start hunting soon, I have a 6q sling and 6 MM I know i cant kill anything with these stats but I wanna know what is the recommended quality sling MM so I can kill fox, boar and dear.Im not gonna hunt bear until I have at least 50MM and a bow. Also what stats/attributes should I train to get high quality leather, string, and slings, my dexterity is 17, and survival is 3. I put most of my LP in exploration and my claim

I'd advise a q10 Sling and 20 Marksmanship just so you don't go insane from boredom. You should know the trick to hunting in a boat, chasing boars that run, trapping bears so they don't run, and avoiding deer until you have an idea of what you're doing and a bow.

If something is moving when you use a melee attack, you automatically hit for 100% damage so if a boar runs away after you shoot it, move to run speed and punch it to death. Faster than trying to trap it and sling it to death. If there's a swamp nearby trap it anyway because it'll outrun you in a swamp.
Trap bears and foxes with signposts so they can't run since they run faster than you and are annoying to catch.
Deer self heal so avoid them.
Aurochsen and Mouflon always give q10 meat and skin, don't need to be trapped, and never run.

For crafting better stuff you just need a better skinning tool (Sword or Stone/Axe) and high survival. To make good string just kill a bear, skin it, dry it, and turn it into leather straps. You'll get 8 leather straps per hide and they'll be the same quality as the skin. Leather straps = String. For leather you'll need decent carpentry, good bark, and good water, and good wood in addition to high survival and skinning tools.

Animal type and level will determine the maximum quality of the animals skin. Check the wiki for that information. I remember someone mucking up the data and correcting it awhile ago so it should be alright now.

Leather quality = (3*qHide + qBark + qWater + qTub)/6.

You can hunt bear with sling just fine. It's the deer that are hard, as they heal themselves (and other animals) a lot, so you need to deal damage faster than they can heal it. Anyway, I'd say that 10 is the minimum to get started properly, but is gonna be very slow. At 30 the speed is acceptable, I guess. Do note that your effective marksmanship is capped by 2x your sling quality, ie with your q6 sling you can only use 12 MM and anything over that is wasted.

For good leather you'll want survival for skinning and making an axe (axe q drags down skin q) and a saw for making boards (use boar bones or bear if you get one, for higher q). Then you need carpentry to make good planks for a tanning tub, and that's it leather wise. Sewing is needed to process this leather into armour, but making slings takes survival instead. Leather straps (likely the best string you can get right now) are always same q as the hide, no skill caps them.

Or you could up survival and forage nettles for strings. You can find them 30+, with Q10 leather it enough to use 30/40MM

I tried killing a boar but it ran away, and as stated above If its running and i punch it i do 100% damage. If I when and bought un-armed combat and had just 1 ua could I kill a boar or would I need more ua? I have alot of curos so there is no problem. I also just got 13 MM

Your ua doesn't matter, you'll automatically hit.
