How long does it take (on average)...

Postby pretzelguy1 » Tue Sep 20, 2011 3:57 am

How long does it take to get a cabin? How long does it take to get a baricaded town? How long does it take to get the ability to knock down these baricades?
This is being on your own without any help from towns.

I had a cabin within my first 6 hours on the server with hearthfires around it protecting the entrance and my drying racks (Why did everyone need to steal the rabbit furs at the start of the server, I don't understand). I pushed UA and had my first bear and deer kills on the first day so I didn't get Yeomanry until the second day (and I lost two clay spots because of it). Shortly after dropping claims we had palisades up and ready.

If you know what you're doing you can work fast. Otherwise plan it out with help from the forums and wiki and keep bone glue and rope on storage alts to keep rare materials safe. You should be able to get everything going and done after 4-7 days. Use multiple clients to help you gather and transport wood, convert it into blocks, and build it into walls faster. If you juggle 5+ clients you can build an entire wall in less than an hour.

For older systems, multi-clienting might not be an option. The Arksu client in The Wizards' Tower supports clients running in tabs and is a bit easier on resources. Just tossing a bit more info out there for those that want it. ;)

You can build a small palisaded enclosure (20 by 40ish) in an hour solo cliented anyway. You are going to want to catch every rabbit and pick up every string object you need for the rope and bone glue. Once you have the initial post up and set (24hour wait), the actual building time is not so much, if you have prepared by chopping down all nearby trees (but not made them into blocks - logs last, blocks don't).

If you also want a house, remember to collect resources like boughs (and bark for tanning and stuff for cone cows) before chopping, it seems obvious, but it can be missed and will save you unnecessary travelling. Personally, I'd build your palisade before your house. It's not the ultimate protection, I know, but it's more secure than an unfenced area if you want to play a pure game (no alts, etc).

If you stick to using the lean-to to protect a crate when you log off and keep anything important on your character, you should be fine. Make sure to put your hearth fire directly in front of your door, too, to prevent anyone entering. Of course, someone could just break the hearth fire, but odds are if people are that curious, they're going to break into a palisade, too. A house gives you bulk storage for odds and ends like extra food or mildly annoying to gather items like extra dandelions, nettles, fishing gear, etc. You can also get a table set up and basic Symbel items. A 10% hunger mod doesn't seem like much, but everything helps.
