How Do I get new crafting skills and buildings?

Hi! How do I get new crafting skills and building skills ? I want to make a sword and a house but they don't seem to pop up and just have the same things. I can make a axe and a cup, in building, I can make a a flat bed ( Sorry, I am not playing so I don't really what its called) and baskets from branches. I got the some "will power thing" and other stuff. Do I need to wait until it pops out on its own or do I have to do something to make them come out.
