Empty Ant Nests....

Last four (also only four) I have raided with this hling have been completely empty. Is this normal?

If your inventory is full then they'll just fall to the ground and you won't see them since they're so small.
Otherwise yes, that happens. It's rare in terms of probability but even rare things happen. Congratulations on being an outlier~!
