First, you dont' need water. Water is a convenience to help recover from strenuous activities faster. In fact, if you're hungry with little food, it's best to avoid drinking.

You can always eat the taproots. Ants will probably be your best bet. I know it's best to study the ones that count as curios, but starvation is more important than a few hundred LP. I suggest bumping your exploration up more. The forest is full of blueberries and chantrelles (mushrooms). Fishing will also help. The problem with fishing is it's either slow, hard to find an active fishing spot, or burns up a lot of stamina so it won't be slow (ie digging for worms or trying to collect leeches from a swamp). Forests usually aren't so large that you can't find another land type within about a 5-10 minute walk in one direction. My suggestion is to just walk in as straight as line as you can and see what else you have in your area. You do have the advantage of making a lot of cone cows, the best LP in the early game.

Other things that will help: don't take damage. This drains your hunger as you heal SHP. Avoid running or sprinting, as these drain stamina which then makes you hungry.

It takes quite a while to go from very hungry to starving as long as you don't do things to make yourself hungrier. Be patient and you should be fine.

I would suggest walking until you find a broadleaf forest. You can find apple trees, hazelnut trees, and mulberry trees. Also you should get foraging ASAP so you can start finding foragable food.

agreed with this but not always easy to find broadleaf, I started on a island without any. Also you should learn how to raid anthills (by that I mean how to raid them that will not kill you) it saved my life and could save yours. :D

You have to herp derp the ants. Start to raid, when they come after you run to shallow water, when they hit the water they go all derp and forget you exist. Raid and eat.

Harass the hive then walk away to draw them away from the hive so you can run back and raid it safely. Alternatively get 10+ Unarmed combat and be better than the ants. Walking into water shallows also screws up their pathing ai and breaks them so that you can safely raid the hive. Ants move at crawl speed and do very little damage per hit, you have to really try to die to them.
