1) No, they burn out. I honestly don't remember how long they last anymore, this hasn't been relevant in so long.
2) Yes: There are 344 hearthlings playing.
Of these, there are 63 from United States, 37 from Russian Federation, 35 from Korea, 18 from Canada, and 17 from Poland.
You just have no friends on your kinlist.
3) No clue why. It unlocks the recipe for tea and the herbalist table.
4) Kuksa allows you to cup water and drink it to restore stamina. A weaker waterflask, if you will, as they only hold 0.3 liters of water.

Again, I'd like to refer you back to:

A bit of further explanaition: Jorb and Loftar finally released the client as open source about a year and half to two years ago. All of the third party clients let you turn off the darkness so it's always as bright as the brightest day. Go to the Wizards' Tower and download Ender's client.
