Your pole should be made of :
-Fishing pole base (you probably already have this)
-Fishing line (it can be taproot or yarn or even something else, most items that are considered strings will work)
-Fishing hook
-Fishing bait or lure (depending on what you want to catch)

Using wrong bait or lure might result in no catch at all.

Stinging Nettles and Hide Straps are the only two types of string that can't be used as fishing line. Anything else--yarn, silk thread, plant fibres, spindly taproot--can be used.

Bait--worm, leech, intestine--all catch the same thing if I recall correctly, and will catch the same two fish almost consistently. Using lures made using crafting are where it gets tricky. I've always stuck to live bait as it's not hard getting. Leeches are easy to gather early on. Just stand in a swamp and pick them off as they pop up (or let them feed a few cycles if you want to improve their quality some.) Worms take a bit of stamina to get, but are much higher quality usually. Once you get a farm (livestock) or hunting often, you usually have way more than you need in intestines, no matter how much sausage and cheese you're making.
