Any advice for a budding village?

Postby CainRedfield » Tue Sep 27, 2011 12:37 am

Hey guys,

My 2 brothers and I just started playing this game about a week ago. We have started a village that currently has 4 timber houses with multiple storage cupboards, a kiln, an oven, a loom, a farm with almost every type of plant in it, and leather processing facilities. We're currently at the point where each of us have around lvl 14-15 average attributes and a couple skills each at around lvl 12-15, with the exception of Xaniff who has lvl 30 unarmed combat. As for armour, we almost all have full leather. So we're all still fairly nooby, but I think we've advanced fairly quickly seeing as we've been playing a good 3 hours a day each, at least.

So I was wondering if any of you seasoned veterans or anybody has any advice for us? What direction should we take to advance our village? What sort of things should we be doing right now and pushing to get? We're looking to hopefully start recruiting some other fairly new players to our village sometime soon, or really anybody who wants to join that isn't way out of our league, given that they're active of course. How would we go about doing that? Basically any advice would be greatly appreciated.

any of the following that you haven't done yet would be a solid step forward:

collect every type of crop, find a metal deposit, accessible clay spot, water > q10 if possible, build a village idol, personal claims, and palisade.

if you find any iron, save every bit of it towards a brickwall.

In the regards of walls, when you finally get around to building a brickwall, build it on the OUTSIDE of the palisade. Having raiders bash your pali, and use it to protect their ram isn't fun.

seal any posts to palisades and walls you do build.

i do suggest that if theres 3 of you, that you each take on a specific role withint he village. I.e. one focus on farming, another or hunting, and someone on mining as a start. then share out other jobs like the leathering and building work needed.

if youre a farmer, you will need to make sure your personal beliefs are on full nature. for a miner it should be on full industry.

your safety at present is your main priority. palisade and build a brickwall as soon as possible.
do NOT build or set up a place right next to a river/lake
Do NOT set up base next to active big villagers, they will cover u in banners and you will lose your place
dont go out out with keys to your place when u do have walls
dont open up your place and allow randoms uve met inside (although i have done this and made good friends, but is generally a really bad idea)
dont allow newbs asking for assistance to lure u out of your walls (can generally be a trap)

players will kill u for no reason, so you should always been on guard. but as new players i would seriously suggest taking the risk and getting to know the people and villages closest to you and building some ties with them. if you get killed, at the very least u didnt lose a really strong charachter.

good luck:)

I'd suggest a hunter/forager should be full industry too, I realise that grey and cave clay and feldspar aren't that hard to come by but if you are lucky enough to find some on a high q node then twice is better than none. I do sometimes think that full nature should have a foraging benefit.

Well a large claim is always nice, if you can make an alt account that is specifically used for the claim so that all of its LP can be put to good use, then when you get a village claim make him the lawspeaker. He is basically used to hold your space for you but is never logged on so that your owner will never be killed walking around. Another tip is to get a palisade around your village. It's not the best defense from advanced players by any means since most people worth their salt can destroy them, but it keeps the noob thief alts at bay. Lastly, when you make a palisade, DO NOT CARRY THE KEYS. Having keys on you means people will have full access to your village if they KO you and take them. Oh and btw, seal all of your cornerposts once you're done building or they can easily build onto your wall and trap you/a ram inside where you can't get at them. I hope this helped
