this thread from May various people seemed to believe that you don't get caves in mountains at all. And Sevenless said that the way caves work, they can't cope with multiple entrances, so it seems that having a higher density of caves probably wouldn't be a good thing.
I've seen caves in mountains before, though I won't deny that Loftar could have changed the world gen code and prevented it, as the closest mountain area to me doesn't have any caves. The caves I've seen in mountains were in w3 and w4.
Caves cope just fine with multiple entrances. It's the drawing algorithm that's a bit... borked. Instead of drawing up far enough, it often seems to stop short of intersecting a wall (that or just leaves an entrance with absolutely no cave whatsoever. Sevenless was a great contributor to the community, but he in no way had any more information than any of the rest of us. The simple fact is that we can't know how the algorithm works without a lot of information that nobody has bothered compiling or just isn't available to us..

But there are many cave tunnels under mountains, just like under any other terrain
Thanks for the astounding distinction there. However, read what I wrote above. Cave entrances will exist in mountains, but the odds of finding one there are slim.
