Just joined and it seems to me like the world is incredibly empty, how many people actually still play this regularly?

Oh okay, cause when i go to the heart menu it says i'm alone in the world. I take it this means in-game friends?

Yes when you meet new people you can kin them and they will be in the that menu for you to pm anytime. You can also enter other people's hearth secrets to make them your kin. You can read some of the strategy guides here in How do I?

also being in an isolated area isn't too bad when you start out, it gives you a chance to learn the game basics before you get robbed too much...
