Is there a how-to guide someone can point me to on the basics of mining in this game? Is there a specific str you need to start, etc? I'm new to the game.

STR depends on the hardness of the rock you're trying to mine. Most people use a snaking technique if they don't have mine supports.

Try a search on "+mining +guide". You can also look up mining on the RoB wiki: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Mining. There's also a section on mining in Sevenless' guide at the top of this forum.
