Am I Doing The Right Thing?

Postby 13579001 » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:39 am

The way I learned to kill pretty much anything and everything, is with archery. I have 12 mm and a quality 21 sling, I recently died and i'm trying to recover from having 22 mm. What I do, is learn Unarmed Combat (the skill not the value) and get punch. I fire at lets say at a boar until it runs away. When it decides to run, I go after it and beat it to death 8-) . This has not backfired on me (yet), but is there a possibility the animal can turn around and attack me? And am i doing the right thing by going out and attacking me, and when should i switch to the wooden bow? Please answer with helpful intentions. :D If you have any questions yourself for me, I'll be happy to answer them. :)
Just when you think you're the best player in haven and hearth, you look at your neighbors, they have cows. Cows = BACON! The only reason this game isn't the best thing ever created, is that there isn't any bacon in it. No, bacon, = FAIL!

The only time a boar will turn on you that i know of is if a nearby deer heals it. As for switching to a wooden bow, i probably wouldn't at all considering a sling is generally better for hunting.

A bow is considered better at around q40 or so as long as you can stay supplied with equivalent quality bone arrows. You also need an appropriate amount of marksmanship to go with the bow, which I consider to be 1.5x the bow quality up to 2x (at which it caps). At anything under those numbers, the bow is just too slow to aim and inaccurate. Of course, what you give up in speed in paid over in much higher damage. (40 is about the quality where you can occasionally one-shot boar and deer.)
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

I would start out with the sling and then upgrade the sling in your shoes. After a while you can pretty much kill anything with 1 hit from a sling and wooden bows do little to no damage if someone is wearing light armour. From their once your mm is high enough I would get a R bow to be useful against other players.

Your sling is more or less incapable of getting one shots on most animals ever so this is pretty much a lie. At q100+ you can start taking down Deer in one hit if you do max damage on your sling attack. Getting a bow before then is worthwhile as its damage output is actually significantly better than a sling. Bows are great for animal hunting.

This may be a different case, but when a deer that ran from me healed itself it ran back at me but wouldn't attack, so I'm pretty sure that the boar will not attack you even if a deer heals it, it will just wait patiently while you kill it.

Also, in case you havnt tried, your same technique will work on any animals, and even though a bear will usually out run you if you chase it for long enough without loseing aggro it will come to you and sit and let you kill it

Happy hunting:p

That's correct Ninja. Once you've dealt a massive blow to them or carved away too much HP, then any animal that is not a Mouflon or Auroch will set themselves to peaceful to you and attempt to flee. Even if they're healed, as long as you don't break combat then they won't switch back to combat mode, thus rendering them harmless as a kitten.

Im not talking about bears or deer. But you would need high q arrows for a bow to function while a sling only needs stones and sooner or later can 1 hit everything but bears ( and deers if your q is low enough ) Some people won't always have access to the arrows as your require survival and some nice q bones. Furthermore a sling saves you so much more space.

You are correct that most people will never have the q1960 sling necessary to kill a bear in 1 shot.
You will find that the bow makes up the bulk of the damage with bows and arrows and the arrow is actually a fairly small factor. With the arrow adding 20 damage at base q10 while the bow has 110 damage at base q10.

It is also easier to get the q40 Bow necessary to kill a deer in 1 shot compared to the q160 sling necessary.
Likewise, a q250 sling is impractical for most people to 1 shot a boar with.
q160 for Mouflon and q360 for Aurochsen

A sling will not be one shotting anything for any newbie any time soon.

If you mean players then this is stupid unless your primary target is unarmored newbies. Even a set of q10 leather armor, pants, and boots adds up to be 120 Damage Reduction. God help you if they have a boar tusk helmet on too. Ranged weapons have 0% piercing making them highly ineffective there as well.

Wow, you guys, so many great replies, but I'm still confused on WHEN I should change to the bow, and end up with the wooden bow. Again thxs so much. :D
