The one thing most important here is how you play: are you a part of a group or are you a hermit?
If you're a hermit, you probably want to get survival up to at least 50 as soon as possible. This will have an effect on the quality of meat, hides, and bones you get. (The long term goal for survival is to have someone at 200+ that can butcher bears, trolls, and farm animals.) It wouldn't hurt to put more into Exploration, too, but 20 is a decent enough start that pushing up Perception will make a big difference. Aim for 50 or more there (you want to hit about 3500 Perc x Expl for maximizing foraging). If you're going to be doing farming, You'll want to keep that skill higher than your crop's quality, so that can always go up. For combat skills, you will probably want to purchase all the purchasable ones (Fire & Ice, Militia Training, etc.) and get your Unarmed, Melee, and Marksmanship up high enough for you to hunt and protect yourself. As a hermit, nothing spent will be wasted, though the returns might not be as immediate as you'd hope for. My one big rule of thumb in spending LP as a hermit: buy for the major goal am I working towards at the moment.
If you're working with a group, find out what the group needs of you and focus on that. Exploration is always good in group cases because there is almost never enough foraged foods, craft items, and curios. Otherwise, everyone is going to specialize in farming, hunting, fighting, smithing, mining, farming, etc.
