There are some very good guides to this. First, read Sevenless' Beginner's guide stickied at the top. It has a mining section. Second, there's a good guide on the wiki: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Mining

edit: strike that about the guide stickied at the top. I could have swore it had his mining guide in it. It is on the wiki, though.
