Pine vs oak

So if you want to grow trees prurely for the logs, are pine trees better than oaks? Do they take less space than an oak because an oak is obviously bigger than a pine...

You'd be wasting your time with either one. Grow Elm, Birch, or Fir. All are two logs and grow in half the time of oak or pine. Birch is also useful for getting good quality bark boats, which are still decent curios if you can push the quality on them up to 100 or more.

If you're intent on growing either one, do the one appropriate to the ground type you're growing on. But no, I don't have an exact time for the growth stages. (I have no information that isn't on the wiki.)

From my experience it seems that all 2 logs trees take less than 3 real days to reach second-to-last phase, if planted on their native terrain type. After that it's a matter of luck whether, and when, tree will reach maturity - could be a day, could be a month.
