How much strength do you need to mine a L1 cave with a q10 pick?

There is no absolute. You could maybe mine level 3 in spots with that str/pick and yet have spots on lvl 1 that you couldn't with 100 str and a qual 50 pick. there are random varying hardness's of stone is what it all comes down to.

How about this, I was mining in a hole last night, and it was going so quickly that it was almost like the speed of drinking water. I made a slip-up and a cave in occurred, and from that point on, mining any and every tile is agonizingly slow. Do cave ins permanently fuck up the rate at which you mine?

The rock where You mining now is hardest than rocks in place where You mine before..

make sure you clear cave in rocks or you'll get more cave ins...and yea some nodes are really easy and go even faster than drinking water(I love those kind) the higher your strength and better quality your tool is the more likely you'll find a node you can mine that fast.
