Doesn't really matter where you find it. Take what you can get. If you find an acre clay spot, then set up next to it so you can do most of your processing there. Don't move a large bunch of clay. Make what you want on the spot. That is unless you're making bricks for a wall (and then it's a decision to process on the spot or haul the clay back chests at a time).
If transport is a pain for you, then set yourself up a claim where the clay is and build a small wall and put your hearth fire there. FYI, this only works if your part of a village (with a village totem). You can then travel back and forth quickly. It'll take a good bit of wine, beer and tobacco, though, as you need to have your travel weariness low enough.
