Tree Growing

Postby questionmark » Tue Nov 15, 2011 6:43 pm

A few questions about tree growth:

1. If i pull a branch off a tree while it is not full grown does this effect the quality of the pulled branch and/or the whole tree itself? (e.g. if I take a branch from a half grown oak tree, would this effect its quality(branch and tree) at all?)
2. What exactly stunts a trees growth? Is walking in its radius enough to stunt it?

sorry, I couldn't find a definitive answer through searching the boards/wiki

Anything withing the trees growing range when it's time to grow will stunt it's growth. This has been a known problem since at least w3 (when tree growing was added, I believe.)

To clarify: Pulling branches, etc. wont stunt it?

1) The branches you gain from the tree will be lower quality than it should be when it is fully grown. Gathering branches off of a tree with not affect the quality of the tree itself for the most part with one exception listed below.

2) The time it takes for it to grow is in hours interval except the last stage which requires a decay hit. If something with a hitbox (something you can "bump" into physically and stop) is within the tree's growth radius when it is time to grow, it will be permanently stunted. This includes any animals, structures, building, signs, and hearthlings. This includes people that may be around gathering branches on it. Ideally this shouldn't happen while you are gathering branches unless you have bad timing and bad luck.

From my experience it seems that tree is not permanently stunted when something is in its hitbox.
I have seen many trees which weren't maturing for days / weeks / months and at some point they matured.

It seems to me that tree needs a player nearby for the decay hit to occur - maybe they appear only when the portion of the map they are in is spawned?
The trees that took the most time to mature were located in my abandoned settlement, which i was visiting once a week maybe.

Does a falling tree make a sound if there's noone around to hear it?
Does a growing tree get hit by a decay tick if there's noone around to spawn the map?

:D

sorry, but i disagree to the above, both...
-trees that got stunt have never ever grown to the next stage in my experience.
-trees do not need a player nearby for the decay hit to occur. mulberry i was picking everyday took much longer to grow to the last stage than the trees i had planted at my clay spot where i hardly visited. (they all grew to the last stage while i was gone.)

Perhaps you thought it was stunted but it was just taking longer to grow? I have seen trees mature in a couple days while others take a lot longer. I thought this mulberry tree was stunted but it ended up growing eventually, it ended up being like q8 though...

I think there's some confusion on what it means to have a stunted tree. Each tree variety has a fixed number of growth stages, n being the final stage. the first n - 1 stages are automatic and on a timer. The last stage is always random and based on the decay mechanic. When a tree gets stunted, it won't even get to the n-1 stage. It'll stop growing before then.

Now, nobody has, that I know of, shown that the tree bug has been fixed. It may or may not have been. Feel free to try to prove/disprove it if you want.
