Tree planting and terrain types

If you plant an apple tree on a grassland does it become broad-leaf forest terrain overtime or by default will it switch to pine? Also if you plant an apple tree on a pine forest tile, does that eventually convert to a broad-leaf tile?

Yes. Trees slowly transform the surrounding tiles to whatever type of terrain they prefer.

but they grow much slower on a type thats not natural to them...
