How does studying actually work?

Like I know how to use it but what does it actually do? I just put an item in there wait then it disappears what after that?

When it disappears, you receive LP. Why not just try it and see?

As you probably know, the items you study are called curiosities. Once the time is up, the curiosity disappears and you gain LP based on the curiosities' base LP, and its quality http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Quality. Also note that curiosities take up mental weight, and to increase this you have to increase your intelligence level.
