Prospecting multiple nodes close together?

Postby Aerocross » Sat Dec 10, 2011 7:36 am

Earlier, I got a reading and started to follow it. After extending my tunnel and prospecting multiple times, however, I'm somewhat confused.

The red arrows I added are dowsing directions I obtained on previous readings. Am I basically dealing with two different nodes that are both within range of the scan? What reading will I get if I'm on top of a node while within range of another?

Could be two nodes. Could be one very large node. Prospecting points at a random tile in a node. Heck, you could be standing on one edge and prospecting points you towards two other sides.

I caught the topic to make a question.

Often when the prospect arrow give you a direction, you follow it and gain No minerals found. I've walked all ove the line of the arrow and didnt find anything. It happen to me often.

my question is: Is the prospect system bugged so that some arrow is really far from the vein (or totally a ghost vein)?

If no, well i'm just unlucky.
If yes...ther's no way to fix it?

Yes, it shows you what is on the layer under you.

I didn't get to really learn the prospecting system in w3, but my understanding was that it reliably pointed you at a ore node because it was just a single tile. You had to go through tons and tons of rustroot because the area searched was relatively small and if there wasn't one there, you'd get a definite yes or no.

If I recall right, Sevenless had the same question, which was why he researched and wrote up his guide (which I believe got posted to the wiki). His conclusion was that it's not bugged, but something going on server-side we don't know about.

from the wiki:

However, when scanning there is a chance that you will fail to detect ore whether or not it is present within scanning range. It seems that once you have failed, a small area (5x5?) around you will no longer give positive readings. If you have gotten on track of a node and fail, move ~5 tiles before scanning again to pick up on the node again. How exactly this failure mechanism works is unknown.

Actually, the radius was 1000 tiles, so all the mines were found within a couple of days of world launch.

lol if i show you my triangolation you got crazy. it's all a mess and all the arrows keep me pointing an area and still im unable to find it. I suspect the node is so squeezed that i have to fins the EXACT TILE.

How unluky XD

I show you my map. (the map is fake but the prospecting dots are true.)

i think i'll start to go around ignoring arrows...XD

When did the thing with the quality determining the radius come about? I thought that was part of w3. --edit: Looks like it was a change at start of w4.
