Definitely this. Word of caution: if you're going to go out leaving scents around, make sure one of two things are possible,

A) Your alt can't be tracked back to you if you're a hermit or a part of a village, or
B) Your village is ok with you leaving some (or even a lot) of scents around.

Extremely. If you're a part of a village, or even a hermit, it gives you a way to fight back without putting your crafters and explorers at risk. Just expect to die a lot until you get very intimate with the combat system.
