Bones, The Map, and More

Postby nichdel » Mon Dec 26, 2011 6:45 pm

Hello, I've been playing with some friends for a couple days and we're learning pretty quickly but we've had a few questions.

First off, bones are a serious limiting factor to us. We started in a rather vast Broadleaf Forest. There's a swamp and Mudflat nearby, if we travel far enough north, we get to a conifer forest. We're surrounded on three sides by rivers (and don't have boatmaking yet) and have yet to see any grasslands. Because of this, we haven't been able to kill anything (Bunnies are hard to catch in a forest). Any solutions for this situation?

I've also noticed via the forums that the main way to find people in the world is to give coordinates on the world map. How does one figure out where they are on the map? Is it just a matter of looking for your location on it?

Also, until we get a farm going, we don't really have any stable food source besides apple/cranberry trees. Is there any poor man's food source we can set up?

Any help is appreciated.

1) At this stage rabbits really will be your only hope of acquiring bones unless you're willing to explore further. You'll need to walk up to them and when you're right on top of them, right click them to pick them up. This way you won't have to attempt to chase them. They won't run if you're just walking up to them. Otherwise, when you can, make a bow or sling and kill a larger animal. If you hide in water shallows the animal can't get to you.

2)Q: Is there any way to view your coordinates easily?
A: Nope~! Your best bet is to locate distinctive features around your area, in my opinion lakes and mountains are ideal, then scan through Alg's map until you locate yourself. The more of your area the better off you'll be. If you're using a custom client such as ender's, you also have auto mapping which will generate a map based on your minimaps automatically. You can utilize this to better find yourself on the world map.

3) Fishing. Hunting, Cattle, Farming, Fishing, Foraging, and Cheese are the primary forms of food acquisition. Hunting, Cattle herding, and cheese farming are likely out of your reach at the moment so your next best bet is Fishing and when mushrooms/berries you can find with exploration. Ants also make a nice meal.

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply! I actually managed to catch a rabbit shortly after reading it.

Another question: Is there a way to turn cobblestone to dirt?
