Newbie Mining

I started playing 2 days ago and im just about to start mining for ore in a cave i found.
Unforunetly the wiki still left me a bit unsure and i need some simple clarification before i get myself killed.

Will either of the 3 paths in the pic below cause cave-ins?

2) if no cave-ins will occur, is there a more optimal way?

Trolls can apparantly spawn... but i heard something about that they need a 2 wide tunnel to spawn which means they cant spawn in the tunnels i marked on the map... is this correct?

is there a way to pick up water in a bucket and then make the water get into my waterflasks? (or some other easy way to bring a lot of water deep into the mine)

my stats are super low but i got a 68ql beer tooth necklace from a guy.
Therefor i can only mine in a very small part of the cave where the walls are soft (even though it stretches extreme distances)... will more strength make me mine any faster and/or is there any skill to help mining?

is there any way to effectively find veins except random mining? (when you dont have rustroot)

7) how far should i expect to mine before finding anything?


ps. atm i got 20 str (necklace included) and 22k LP that i can spend.

Firstly 20str is little, try getting a bear cape to help you mine better.


To find ores just walk around in the cave mining walls until you find ore.

Trolls don't spawn very often, so you don't have to worry about them.

Yes you can bring a bucket full of water and when your waterflask is empty pick up the bucket and right click on your flask.

You want to spend most of your LP in exploration at the start, so you can find studies and get LP.

I think you forgot that i only got 20str...
the ammount of areas i can mine at are very limited.

Push barbarism, it gives you a strength bonus (applies to equipment as well). The downside is that it gives you an int penalty, so you won't be able to study as many curiosities.

Just shoot a bear with a sling, bearcape really is a must for early mining.

Trolls can spawn in 1 tile tunnels AFAIK, but they're about as common as getting hit by a lightning.

Your mining speed is determined by geometric average of your strength and your mining tool quality, so see if you can buy a better stone axe or a pick from your neighbours.

The red path will cause a cave-in, the other two are fine.

Just a couple extra points on these two for the OP:

The barbarism (along with many other factors) is why many players choose to make a pure mining alt. They need little LP, just Str and Con. You don't have to, but many people choose to.

The general consensus is that trolls will never spawn on the first layer (cave layer), so you won't have to worry about them until later.

Just grab a sling, any quality, and some rocks. Hit the rivers in a boat, find a bear, and fire away. It might take an hour to kill a bear this way, but you'll eventually kill it. The better the sling and Marksmanship skill, the faster, of course.
