A few quick questions

So I started playing about 2 days ago or so. First off I died from drowning, lost everything. Started over with like 10 other characters to only have a crappy starting position.
After a few more tries I got a nice position, played, set a hearth secret, got pretty far, logged back in to a bear in my camp, 1shot, unconscious and he camped my body and I died. Created a new character but it says there is no hearth secret for the one I created, what gives? Also is there any way to get any of my stuff back or find where it is on the map?

EDIT: Also I am running out of names, as it keeps saying my dead characters names are in use? Do these expire after a time? And how do I delete characters with cruddy starting spots?

They never expire. Just inherit the stones in your character creation room to spawn back where you were before. You're not going to find yourself on the world map.

Keep in mind that you can only loot corpses from your ancestors. If you don't inherit you will have to wait for the body to decay, and it will drop the stuff on the ground, and some small items might be lost.

Okay, I inherited but it put me nowhere remotely close to where my character even died or their hearthfire, I did notice that I got 1000LP and some skills raised, but it was a fraction of what they had. Is this normal?

Also, WTF is it so hard to find a god dang swamp? Am I the only one that thinks being near a swamp is 1 of the best starting areas?

When you die, you lose an amount of LP, attributes, and skills based on where your beliefs in Tradition or Change are at. At neutral, you lose half of everything. At full Tradition, only 1/4, at full Change, 3/4. (Don't think that going Tradition is worth the risk avoidance. It's not because you also earn 1/3 fewer LP.) Any purchased skills (like Yeomanry), are refunded by the LP cost before the LP loss is calculated.

I'm not sure why you spawned somewhere in the wilderness. The only thing I can think of is someone destroyed your ancestor's hearth fire. I honestly can't remember off the top of my head and don't recall it being anywhere on the wiki.

Yes, swamps are great to have near you. I've not seen an area completely swampless, but they can be hard to find sometimes.

Yup, on both inherits I started in a remote area nowhere close to where I originally was Oh well you die and you learn!

when you inherit are you going up the ladder or using a hs? I only ask because you mentioned setting a hs...going up the ladder uses the exact same hf from your previous char, while using a hs will create a new hf near the hf of the character who set the hs you used.

I used the ladder as my hearth secret doesnt work. The ladder still didn't bring me to my old characters hearth fire, it was random. Every time I move my main character to a better spot I build a hearth fire.

Hearth Secrets for dead characters don't work. The character is dead and thus the HS no longer exists. It's as simple as that

If you're afraid of dying again and want to keep your spot you might concider making an alternative character spawned near your hf. Give him a hs and never touch that alt again.
When you die, you're alts hf will remain and you can just spawn in your camp again with his hs
