Best farming plot sizes?

Postby Trelayne » Wed Jan 04, 2012 4:50 pm

Greetings to all Hearthlings, we come in peace.

1) What is the best pattern for planting crops? I've been given five carrots by a friendly neighbour of mine, and these things look set to take over the place.
4X6 plot pattern is the one I'm using now, as it seems manageable and tidy (see screenshot). Not sure about how effective it is space-wise or in mass farming.

2) Linked to the 1st one: is cross-pollination implemented in game? I'm looking for any sort of dependency between plot sizes and increasing quality of seeds :)

3) I've dug a bunch of wells and it looks like there is underground vein or a lake - if you put all wells on a map, there is like a circle underground, with quality increasing towards the center.
Dowsing rod, however, cannot find any well digging spots where the "center" is. If I just build a well on an empty spot, will it still connect to the same body of water?

4x5 - 20 plants - 60 seeds with full nature - cup=64 slots for sorting (for beginners) - see Potjeh ProTip for advanced chest users ;)

use search for threads about farming like this:
http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/vie ... ng#p298060
http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/vie ... ng#p269951

cross-pollination is not implemented

wells at different spots have different quality - to find the best you have to build wells to find the highest

Aim to make it a multiple of 12 tiles, so you make an optimum use out of chests (16 for large chests).

Nope, it's as straightforward as it looks, just keep replanting the best seeds you get.

It would. Alas, you can't build a well on an empty spot.

@Potjeh
do i get you right that you're saying building a well (on paved ground) that might be the imaginable center but is not "rodded" gives you water?

No, I said you can't build it at all.

Thank you for your replies. :D
4x5 plots and a cupboard in the cart have now stopped the carrot flood.

Sad news about not being to dig wells at any point. Ah well, at least I've seen some water spots on mudflats.

If the quality is decent ~40Q and above, becareful most people will kill you for it, especially a well as the quality of the water never decreases :)

EDIT: Most people will just kill you "just for teh lulz" anyways. Claim the well is what I'm saying :)
I had a retardedly huge signature and have gotten this embarrassing replacement to show for it.
