How do I make string?

I need to make string, and I tried Taproot and Nettle, and it just won't work for some reason. Am I missing something?

you don't make string, it's a generic term for several items. taproot, nettle, hide straps, plant fibers, silk thread, wool thread are all string. you can use any of them in a crafting recipe that calls for string. you can use any of them except for nettle and hide straps for a fishing line.
