That's just a display bug, your char should be logged out. You can just close the client with the X

If the character is engaged in combat at all, it won't log out. Otherwise, there is a ten second delay after closing the client or going to sleep before being logged out.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

The "not being able to do anything anymore" part is a client/server(?)/...? bug.

- If the sleep action is proceeding normally:
-- The client will drop back to the User-login screen, at ones. (whiteout waiting for the current 4 to 5 second jump/log-out delay.) (That's Client behavior!. Character will stay in game until jump/log-out delay has passed.)
- If not [1]. The client generally ends up in a locks up state, and there is a change the character is also not being logged off. (until the server auto-logs-off the character due to character/user inactivity.)

[1]: Wait a few seconds, as sometimes the log-off action takes a view seconds. (not related to jump/log-out delay)

Not having your characters inventory open seem to lower the change a log-off lockup happening.
+ Not trying to log-off to fast after starting the client (?) and/or after the User/Character login.
