Cave Mining

I found this nice big expansive cave with plenty of shallow water and even some ore's (not talking about the small pointy rocks I know those are stone), but when I try to mine to get to them it always tells me "You are far too weak to mine this rock." I'am equipped with a stone ax because I don't know how to make a pickax. My strength right now is at 49 with my bear cape. I have mining and prospecting but I have yet to find the rustroot. Can anyone help me and tell me what to do so that I can start making new and better tools, etc.

That rock is very hard for you to mine,
Or a message like : You don't even manage to scratch that rock.
Means that your str*toolQ is too low.
Either increase your strength or make a better Q axe/pickaxe

I read the wiki but it doesn't seem to tell me the strength and quality that I need in order to mine.
Is there a starting requirement in order to mine?

there is not "set" hardness for ore/cave tiles, it varies from cave to cave and layer to layer. my suggestion is to checkout the apples and oranges trade section and find a reasonably priced pickaxe, seems some q90s go for a few pearls nowadays

It says down a ways what the messages mean as far as how much more strength you need. If you get lucky, you can find a spot that needs 10 str with a q5 axe producing q80 ore. I'm not saying such a spot exists, but it is possible.

The message doesn't mean there is certainly ore. Could also be stone.
