How do I get food?

I'm kinda loosing food fast. I made a lean-to and a bed and a fire and a stone axe, and found a rat, but I cannot seem to eat anything. Must I somehow cook stuff?

Yes I read a lot of the info topics and such, but I cant find any of the items described. I am in some sort of swamp with curly trees. There is also a forest of fir trees to the west, but there are no apple trees, berry bushes, and stuff like that. I did find a rat...

Read them again, especially Sevenless's Guide for New Players. You shouldn't ever need to eat apples and other crap like that to stay fed. Eat ants, berries, and mushrooms. Get fishing and pig out on fish. Find rabbits and chickens (where available).

I finally figured out how to cook my rat. Sadly, I ventured everywhere and I canot find anything! This is my house:

Aha! After a while of searching and almost starving, I have found apples and hazelnuts. The guide did not tell me how to plant apple trees so I'll just use the ones provided.

Worms can be used as bait when fishing, although as a newbie, you're probably suffering from lack of food... Digging takes stamina fast, so you're best making lures if you want to fish

How to Acquire

To grow a tree, one needs a treeplanter's pot, a herbalist table, water, soil x4, and a seed of the tree you wish to plant. Place the soil, water, and seed into the pot, and the pot on the table. After 1 hour and 40 minutes (dependant on nature-industry slider), the tree will either sprout or die. If it is dead, all you can do is empty the pot and start over. If it has sprouted, you will have approximately eight hours to plant it before it dies. Take the pot, find a spot of grassland or forest where you wish to plant it, and right click on the spot while holding the pot to get the option to plant it. The tree will steadily increase in quality while it grows until it hits maturity and thus its maximum quality.

Who digs worms? Hit a swamp and let the leeches attach. Pick 'em off as they do. Fish bait! And all you have to do is stand there.

Pro-tip: bloated leeches catch different fish at times than regular leeches.
