Postby martenx » Sun Jan 15, 2012 12:47 pm

Hello,,

I am making some video's tutorials about HnH.
It will cover all basic elements of the game

Part one: Getting the ender client

Part two: Creating a character.

Part three: The basic skills.

Part four: The cone cow.

Part five: Hunting a rabbit.

Part six: Building a well

Part seven: Force Summoning someone

If you have any tips , put them under here .

hard to read...not sure what you used to do the screen captures but it blurs the words a bit

If someone really needs a video tutorial on making a character.... meh. Good that you made one, I guess. I'm sure someone will find it useful. Once you have these finallized, we'll pester for them to get stickied.

First off, new player tutorials should be done with the default client. Just a stab, but 90% of the new players use that client their first few sessions. Things should look exactly the same.

Don't try to cram the whole screen in on the video frame. Zoom in on the action some so it's a bit more obvious what you're doing.

Voice-over would be much better than text only. The only reason I can see for not doing voice would be a strong accent or no access to decent recording software (or lack of knowledge in using it). Subtitles are still great, though, especially if people want to get the original files and translate it into another language. For the text, use some presentation tricks. Move it out of the one area and put it on a white or light colored background so people can see it or use a contrasting text color that is more visible. As of now, the text bleeds into the control panel too much.

Might want to use an account with a dead character so you can point out the runestone and what it does in the creation room.

Good effort on pointing out the various parts and explaining what they're for. Those too lazy to read the most basic of written instructions will thank you, too.

Second video critques: it was about 90-120 seconds too long for what you presented. Demonstrating that you can get early LP by discovering items for the first time is good. People don't need to see you discover every single item in the area. There was a lot in there that could be edited out. There's a ton of information that can be added.

For the skills and such, best to stick with the "plan" laid out by other players on what is most useful early on: Foraging, Hunting, Will to Power, Unarmed Combat, etc. (in other words, try to stick to the well known guides, such as Sevenless's). Stoneworking and Carpentry aren't on that short list. They provide nothing useful to new players and only unlocks things that aren't needed until several days (at least) into play. Better to show them how the incrementable skills (exploration, survival, etc) work. Also, a few points in Exploration is going to be much better for new players than all those purchasable skills.

Show players that the main way to get LP is by making and finding curios. Make a cone cow, raid some ants, pick some dandelions, etc.

Also probably a good time to explain how discoveries work and how the mechanic is used for new characters learning how to make craft items and building things.

Again, the same thing about the text and adding voice. ;)

For both the videos: try to get rid of your taskbar. No need to show it. ;)

I do want to say you've got a good start here. You've done more than anyone else has on this and hope you take these suggestions to heart to make great videos. :)

Actually, this guy: http://www.youtube.com/user/westr70/featured , has some really good videos out there.

My critic:

Good video, but crop it more. Can't see what's going on.

You could've merged all of those things into one video. Try making more broad videos, opposed to narrowing it down to such specific topics.

Voice is always better than text. Try getting someone (Native English speaker, a friend?) to do a voice-over with a script you give them.

That's all for now, these were a bit rushed. Magic put some good points out there, but don't do the standard client thing, please. :)

If marten actually does this:

Then that there would put my concerns to rest. :)
