mining? simple know how and location.

greetings

ok my guy is still starting out. can i put a minehole anywhere and get anykind of metal or do i have to do the rustroot thing for even common metals and stuff?

i'm nothing special(heck still got starter clothes and a q 7ish bow with some bone arrows, my highest attribute is int at 35 and my 2 highest skills are markmenship and survival both at 11)

with that in mind, i'm not tying to have a mine that's for "eng game content" or in other words the high level stuff. so i didn't know if you could put a minehole anywhere and mine common metal and stuff

thanx for your replies peeps

It turns out that the entire game is end game content. You have a long way to go before you can get a mine. You need 28 each of Perception and Exploration to even have a chance at finding rustroot. I've been playing since june and I'm at 19 PER and 30 Exploration.

Yeah, the game doesn't really exist for everyone to have fun- just Pumpkin, Blaze, and Rift. Maybe two or three others.
Surprise.

not really man. there is at least a 1000% increase in trade since the new map, with the most common commodity being metal. yes it is nice to have a mine, no you don't need one. i trade metal for food on a regular basis.

And you'll have to go to the edge of the world, because all the central mines are taken.

Could we have some real information about finding a mine, as if we actually had the perception and exploration (I do)?

I have a small amount of rustroot, but I'm afraid to use it, and I can't find more. Some facts, please?

EDIT: The above is still important, but I did find some more rustroot after three hours of searching. Now how am I going to utilize it to the fullest? More help anyone?

Seriously speaking, whenever a new supergrid opens, those players who can handle the level X animals in uncivilized areas rush out and prospect it. If you can't handle fully wild areas, you are probably screwed.

I'm mid range, and find rust root fairly regularly - but I've never bothered to make rust root extract, let alone try to use it.

By the time you can handle the animals, you'll be finding more rustroot than you can use. (Yes, this presumes you train more than just combat, and eat a varied diet rather than e.g. focusing on strength and con.)

Check caves you come across.

Actually useful factual information:

Step 1: Acquire rustroot or rustroot extract
Step 2: Use the prospecting skill

Prospecting: In order to use the prospecting skill you must have at least .1l of rustroot extract in your inventory. The extract is consumed and you will see a message that will either say "No Minerals Found" or "x% y usable" where x is a percent based on your current location compared to the mine location and y is the metal to be found in said mine location. The prospecting skill searches 1000x1000 tiles with you at the center. This means that if you see the message "No minerals found", which you will probably 99% of the time, then there are no available mine locations within 500 tiles in any direction.

Assuming you actually get a hit and see the "x% y usable" message you can basically walk in any direction for a little bit and then prospect again, if the percent is higher then you are headed in the right direction. When the percent is 100, you've found a mine. Congratulations.

As has been mentioned above, nearly if not all of the mines in the center supergrid have been claimed/built. Once a mine hole has been created you can no longer detect that mine using prospecting. In my experience, there are very few unclaimed mines at this time, even in the adjacent supergrids. If you plan on mine hunting, be ready for a lot of headache and fits of rage/crying as you constantly get ganked by level X boars in the vast and unforgiving wilderness.

Caves: You can prospect and find mines inside of caves, but be careful, just because you prospect a mine inside a cave does not mean you will be able to reach it from that cave entrance. The caveworld seems to be linked. By that I mean that you may prospect a mine in a cave and find that every single path in that cave leads to a dead end and never actually to the mine. If that happens you can try heading in the general direction that your prospecting was leading you, outside of the cave. You might find another cave from which the mine is actually accessible.

tl:dr: Prospect with rustroot. Walk a lot. Prospect again. Repeat until you find a mine. Don't bother looking in the main supergrid. Do bother looking in caves.

See what happens when the server goes down? I'm forced to type huge walls of text...
