You can make better leather than that out of bunnies, it just takes effort. If you can get hold of a higher quality bone saw, it helps a lot, but even so you can improve somewhat - make sure your saw is at least q10 and that you have 10 carpentry. Using a normal tree you can now make a q10 tanning tub. If you have a higher quality tree you can cut down, make sure your carpentry isn't softcapping the boards. Use the best quality bark possible (still also may be q10, but never mind).
Now go out looking for water the next time you go hunting. You will find
something better than q10. Use it. And make sure your survival isn't capping the resulting sling (may also be capping the foraged string in the first place, of course).
Now when it comes to hunting - it is totally possible to kill a boar with a bunny leather sling, even if you run out of rocks and have to go chip some more a few times. It's not
fun, but it is possible. Animals only regen hp if they are being healed by deer - it's a swirly green thing and a twinkly noise. If that happens, at this stage, give up. If they are not being healed, it doesn't matter if you break combat to go chip more stones on the other side of the river, they will still be injured. The only problem is that if you take too long they may wander off too far from the river.
If you shoot as soon as the animal twitches, it will not run. If you are lagging too badly, you will see it twitch at the wrong time and it may run. At this level it's not worth going hunting if there's too much lag.
You can sign trap a fox by a river, and it won't be able to break the signs to run away (it
will be able to break signs to attack you, don't get out of your boat). Once you manage to kill it, so long as you have 16+ survival, you will be able to make a q15 bone saw. Make sure you have 12 carpentry and you can make a q12 tanning tub. If you used a q10 stone axe to skin the fox you will have a q13 hide, which you will be able to turn into q12 leather if you're using q10 bark and water, q15 with q30 water, etc.
My god this was long. But this is how the game works, and why it's so much easier to live in a village where someone else did the initial iterations and you can just say oh hey, I need a sling, and there is a q50/80/120 one in the cupboard.
