Any more info on tree planting?

I've made the pots, filled them with clay (soil) and water and planted the cones but is there anything else I have to do?
Will they only sprout if left outside of a container? and so i have to plant them after? or do they just grow from that spot??

You need to put them on a Herbalist's table until they germinate, then hold them and right click on the map to plant them. Please see http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=236
