key for a chest?

I wouldn't ask if I could have found it, but I couldn't.
Anyways, I was in a destroyed village one day, and I tried to open a chest but it said I needed a key to access it. How do I go about making a key for a chest? I checked wiki and forums but I couldn't find anything.

Similar to a palisade gate or brickwall gate, whoever builds the strongbox gets the key.

Oh okay, it is a strongbox you have to build in order to have the key. Not a large/reg chest. This is the first time I've heard of them, and I haven't yet discovered them because I have yet to make steel. Thanks howard.

Destroying a strongbox will get you access to it's contents, Alex?

Similar to a palisade gate or brickwall gate, whoever builds the strongbox gets the key. The key can then be copied with clay and metal, by any person who has the key, and the skill "Locks and Bolts."


If you wish to make a key to that box, you must first find a key to that box, and copy it.


You can't just make keys to and locked thing you see. That would make palisades and brickwalls worthless.

You don't need *A* key, You need the key for the actual chest. You're talking about a strong box, If you build one of these then you are presented with a key in your inventory upon building it.
So unless you find the key or destroy the chest then there is no way to get inside.

Yes, destroying the chest is the ONLY way to get inside a strongbox without a key. Yes, you will have access to the contents of said box after you destroy it. The contents will scatter all over the ground, so if the box is inside a house, there's a good chance many items will scatter to areas that you can't pick them up.
