how do i properly fence in a boar?

i just got 10 marksman(yay!) and tried to kill my first boar. so i get in my boat and search for one near the river, i hit it once(missed) to make it follow me to the river as i hop in my boat for safety! i try to "fence" in the boar using the branches,but once i come close to the boar it hits me! WHILE I WAS IN THE BOAT, for 3/4 of my hp. so im wondering how to properly fence in the wild boar without getting slaughtered! thanks !

You don't need to fence in the boar. Just stay in the boat, away from the boar, and sling it from there.

What quality is your sling, and what is your perception? At only 10MM, I wouldn't expect you to be doing enough damage to scare off a boar like that.

Just killed my first boar on my newbie character. It was a level 7 boar and I had 9mm with a q13 sling. My first hit caused it to flee. I left combat, waited for it to stop following me, then initiated combat with a punch to get it to chase me back to the lake's edge.

From there I just hit with my sling unti I got it to run, in which I would chase after it and punch it to death with my mighty 7 ua.

Interesting. I re-read the wiki, and it does indeed say that boars will flee after a certain HP is reached, rather than a certain amount of DPS. I've never experienced this myself, at least not at earlier levels of perception.

It's both actually. High DPS or low health make them run. I know this because I had to perfect the art of boat chasing last world until I got up to one hitting the suckers with UA.

you best bet is to miss the boar with your first shot and then to watch for 'twitches'. This is when it is trying to attack you and for a short time after a twitch you can hit it with out it fleeing - never had to a chase a boar, or any other animal for that matter. Wait for the twitches and you will be fine.

It's better if it runs away from you than if it sits and fights you. Set your speed to Running, get out of your boat, chase it down, and punch it to death. Because it is fleeing from you, you always hit for 100% of your damage, so just keep punching.
