A beginners guide to ranging?

Postby SherRax » Sun Feb 05, 2012 11:57 am

So, I've been recently attempting to get ranging, but I still only have 20 archery, 20 exploration and 19 perception.
I don't even have my Ranger's cloak yet, due to the lack of silkmoths. All of this got me thinking; What if there was a guide to help new or aspiring rangers? I don't expect some secret handbook, but some basic guides about the quality of the stuff you should get, how to spend your LP properly, and the basics of using scents.
Sidenote; I fully expect to be trolled as a noob right now for this request, but we've all got to start somewhere.

Any input will be appreciated, and will all be editted together if we get enough.
Thanks,
SherRax

wait, what do you mean when you say "a ranger" here?

a ranger on this game usually means someone who track down criminals and deal with them.
and the skill "ranging" is to let you check on scents left by criminals.
you will first need high exploration and perception to find scents and track them, and you will need high combat stats to fight the criminals or defend yourself and your friends. also it matters how many friends you will be ranging with, because a solo ranger with only archery cannot do much... unless your opponents are always weak and you have decent stats and equipments. (which you dont seem to have right now.)

if you mean "a ranger" as a hunter using some ranged combat, as Tyler said on above post, then raising perception and marksmanship will be your priority. you dont even need archery nor bows/arrows while you have low Marksmanship, just a sling and stones will do. read wiki page on archery for details.

familiarize yourself with the game mechanics (especially combat) before you go and die needlessly, i dont know why you think you need a rangers cape to be a ranger, per and exp themselves are pretty easy to get so you cripple yourself by now having armor from a proper helmet. a q40 steel helmet will give you 150 total armor, compared to 0 from a cape. then again it really depends on the perp you're tracking, by now i'm sure some smart criminals could be at 300x400+ int/stealth. if you do eventually track scents, dont be upset if you die, the hearthlands are more volatile now than they've ever been, there is no law and order, only death, so its very possible that you'll be tracking a hardened criminal or a group that will gank you.
