First steps towards metal

Postby Masrunpasiti » Mon Feb 06, 2012 5:34 pm

Hello. I would like to know how exactly one should take a step closer to getting some metal for picks, grinders, plows and other stuff. I have read some articles on mining in HnH but some things I still don't know. Should I randomly go in a cave and poke the walls until I find ore? Or level up exploration until I'm able to find enough rustroot? Should I get a good quality stone axe or pump strength? Does it help much if I mine in caves and how do I find ores in them since prospecting tells you ores beneath you and not inside the cave you are in as far as I know. Also is the snake pattern safe for mining without getting cave ins? How much damage to the cave ins do, and do they do it to HHP? How can I acquire the first metal bars to get a cave support up?

Find a cave, while getting explore up

Poke around in the cave to get your first metals, there very common on caves,, But before you make a minehole you want to prospect

You've answered your own questions here. Do A. It's easiest. While you're at it, keep pushing better exploration and perception so if A doesn't work, you can do B. Keep raising both Str and axe quality (you need a better axe, anyway, to get better quality hides and meat when you butcher). Start a tree farm. You're going to want the better trees for charcoal among many other things, anyway.

Snaking is about as safe as you can get without using supports. Nothing is guaranteed, though. A simple error will cause a cave-in. Cave-ins do damage per rock, so it's entirely possible to get killed just on the first level. Yes, all damage is to HHP and automatically knocks your character out no matter how many SHP you have.

Word of advice: don't worry about losing a character. Worry more about losing your base of industry. Characters can be leveled back up extremely fast.

A high quality stone axe should be something to get your hands on. A high quality pickaxe would be even better. Raise strength. Snake pattern, if done correctly, stops cave ins, yes. Get ore, smelt ore in smelter, change one bar into nuggets using an alloy crucible, use nuggets to make mine supports. The wiki is a great wealth of knowledge for HnH. I've included a link to the mining page, but you can look up most anything and get great info on it. http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Mining

Find a cave, craft a bear cap and a bear talisman to boost your strength even if you need 1 hour to kill the bear do it, make the best quality stone axe or find a pickaxe, and you are good to go. You can start mining almost as soon as you begin with that, you just won't be able to mine in hard rock, but the softer for sure. When you find a vein, just grab the outer zone one each 2 tiles so you won't have cave in, make a pillar and a pickaxe from the first ore you get, after that its an other story. Take care about the spiral pattern you can have cave in and be locked inside like nothing, and you'll have to go around have more cave in... So use pillars at the beginning, its just better to have a smooth experience in the beginning.
