My town has a mine which I haven't actually entered yet and I was wondering if there was a limit. It there a limit to how far out you can mine or can you just keep going and going?

The entire underworld is connected. So you got a mine on layer 1 which is just as big as the surface map. On this layer you have random metal nodes of different sizes. You will just have to try and mine them out.
There are a total of 5 underground layers each giving you access to higher q metal and also silver and gold.
Note that people can mine into your mine if you don't scure it properly.
